Protein powder is the easiest way to get a butt-load of protein in a single meal.
What I don’t like about many protein powders though–vegan protein powders included–is that they’ve got all sorts of additives.
Some have added sugar, gums, and the all-too-common “natural flavors”.
They may also be enriched with vitamins and minerals since many people use protein powders as a macronutrient supplement to their diet.
I personally prefer simple products that have limited ingredients or just a single ingredient, so most mainstream vegan protein powders–which are all flavored and fortified– just don’t cut it for me.
Luckily, I have found one company that makes a vegan protein powder that gives me exactly what I am looking for: a single ingredient without any additives, gums, sugars, or flavors: Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder.
I cannot find this type of protein powder anywhere else. Mocu has managed to do what other companies don’t do with their hemp powders and that’s making them white, powdery and easily dissolvable.
Why use hemp protein?
Hemp protein is great because it comes from the hemp seed, which is a complete protein–a protein source that has all 9 essential amino acids.
These amino acids are things that your body cannot naturally produce, so we must get it from food.
Most of us get these amino acids from meat, which is a complete protein source. So when eliminating animal products on a vegan diet, it is important to ensure that you are replacing those animal-based sources of protein with something else that also has all 9 essential amino acids.
This is why I am a personal fan of hemp seeds and Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder in particular. Both have all 9 essential amino acids making them a complete protein source for vegans.
Why Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder vs Other hemp protein powders?
Most hemp protein powders aren’t great. A lot of them are green and grainy, like Just Hemp’s Hemp Protein + Fiber.
They don’t dissolve well in water or in a non-dairy beverage. They’re okay for baking, but that’s just about it. They may also be a complete protein, but they don’t pack as much protein and punch as Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder. Compare the macros of these two protein powders based on a single 30 gram serving size of each:
Not only does Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder have way more protein for less calories than the other competitive brand, but they also easily dissolve in water, making it super easy to incorporate into a protein shake, smoothie, oatmeal, or even pancake batter.
What about the taste?
Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder has a very subtle taste compared to other hemp protein powders. You taste this “hemp-like” taste in both of them, but Mocu’s is just not as powerful. I don’t consider this a bad thing, since that’s what makes Mocu’s protein powder quite versatile–you can add it to just about anything and not get put off by its taste.
What about the texture?
What really differentiates Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder from the rest is the texture. Mocu’s powder is soft, white, and powdery compared to the course, green, and graininess of other hemp protein powders. This makes Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder dissolve quite easily so that you don’t feel any grainy powder as you are drinking or eating it.
The takeaway
Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder is a 10 out of 10 in my book. Not only is it a complete protein source for vegans, but it’s also easily dissolvable and subtly flavored, making it an easy way to add protein to a drink, pancake, or oatmeal without sacrificing taste or texture.
Later, I will share some of the recipes I use with Mocu’s Hemp Heart Protein Powder to give my everyday meals a boost of vegan protein.
